PHB Ethical Beauty Mascara unexpectedly gives volume, length and thickness – all in one, the eyeliner works well as a creamy eye shadow, while the eye shadow, with barely any fallout, offers a nicely pigmented color.
While I had already posted my first impressions on PHB Ethical Beauty makeup goodies which came in my various Love Lula Beauty Boxes, I thought, given how well they perform, I should write a full review of all the above mentioned makeup products. PHB Ethical Beauty has quite a selection of makeup (and skincare, of course) products, and I have to say I am quite impressed with their makeup – mostly – mascara. Another good side of this brand is the fact the products are not very expensive.

I got this mascara in my July Love Lula Beauty Box, and after nearly 4 months of using it, I can say I am much impressed with its performance, but a bit less with two ingredients (one, in particular).
The PHB Ethical Beauty Mascara is an all-in-one mascara: it is volumising, thickening and lengthening mascara – truly. Just with one layer you get beautifully separated and lashes. You can work the mascara on the first layer, to achieve length and volume, or wait just a bit, and go for another layer. Aside from rich black color, the lashes are full of volume. The mascara does not smudge and lasts basically all day, but it does lose some definition during the course of time. It’s a bit of a water-proof as well, but at the same time, comes off with no problems. The wand is pretty big and easy to use. I have no eye irritation to report.
The formulation of this mascara is quite simple, with ingredients you would expect in a natural mascara – various natural waxes and olive oil. But there are two ingredients of which I am not fond of – one is a preservative Phenoxyethanol, the other a bit more serious in regards to being toxic – Aminomethyl Popandiol. This ingredient, while being a pH adjuster, can be toxic and potentially carcinogenic in higher quantities, but I have to point out a cumulative issue.
The PHB Ethical Beauty Mascara, aside from that one ingredient, is a really great mascara – it covers many needs one looks for in mascaras, but usually we have to buy several to achieve the same look – it separates the lashes, it gives volume and length as well as nicely pigmented black color. The price is not too steep, though it may not be as affordable as some other mascaras – around 18€ for 10ml. There’s quite a lot of product in the tube and the mascara is very wet, so this mascara can be stretched over 3 months, which is a recommended limit for the life span of mascara.
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Oryza Sativa Wax (Rice Bran Wax), Olea Europea fruit oil (Olive Oil), Vegetable Source Cetyl Alcohol (Coconut), Coernica Cerifera (Carnauba Wax), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla Wax), Vegetable Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Acacia Gum, Black Iron oxide (CI 77499), Aminomethyl Popandiol (Ph Adjuster), Phenoxyethanol (Preservative)

The eyeliner came in my August Love Lula Beauty Box and I’ve been using it quite frequently. It’s a very creamy eyeliner and since I don’t use eyeliners in my water line (my eyes are too sensitive and I do not like that look), I prefer using them on my lids – mostly to smudge them, and this eyeliner looks really nice on my eyes. I’ve been actually using it as a cream eye shadow the most, or in combination with brown eye shadows. The PHB Ethical Beauty eyeliner is very soft, its application is easy and fast and works really well when I want to achieve a natural look and don’t have much time (which is – most of the time). Its staying power is around 4 hours, but that’s not the problem, as it can be re-applied really fast. The color is a nice, natural earthly brown, so all those, with brown and hazel eyes – this eyeliner would look really nice on you.
The price of this eyeliner falls somewhere in between – with approximately 12€ for 4g. Given the eyeliner is soft, you may use it faster than those eyeliners, which are of a harder consistency, but that doesn’t mean you’re gonna go through it in a month, of course not.

This eye shadow came in my October Love Lula Beauty Box and wrote a short first impression: This eye shadow, even though its name is almond, is actually a goldish champagne. It’s quite pigmented, there’s barely any fall-out and it’s finely milled and soft. Great color to be used as a base eye shadow or just in the corner of the eyes, and, if you’re inclined, which I am not – bellow the eye brows. Given this is a natural eye shadow, a pressed mineral eye shadow, you should not expect it to last as long as conventional – it lasts for about 4-5 hours. Now I’m curious about a few other PHB Beauty eye shadows.
Ingredients: Mica, Iron Oxides, Calcium Carbonate, Caprylic Triglyceride, *Simmondsia Chinensis (Organic Jojoba), Ultramarines, Titanium Dioxide

My final word?
Despite that one ingredient, the PHB Ethical Beauty mascara gets a thumbs up from me: its performance is that good. I’m also like both the eyeliner and the eye shadow and will check more of their eye shadows in the future. Now, as far as the price goes – all the above mentioned makeup products might fall somewhere in between, though at the same time – it could be argued they may be a bit over-priced – eye shadow and eye liner in particular. Mascara? Again, its performance makes for an excuse to spend 18€ on it. Now, here’s the catch! Love Lula has a limited-time offer of the mascara and eyeliner duo at 50% off – that is for both the mascara and eyeliner you pay less than just for mascara alone. I’d call that a great deal, wouldn’t you?
