What are carrier oils/vegetable oils?

Carrier oils/vegetable are lipids (naturally occurring molecules such as fats, waxes and Vitamins A, D, E and K) derived from plants. They are chemically composed of triglycerides (an ester, derived from three fatty acids and glycerol). Carrier oils/vegetable oils are derived from various parts of plants; mainly and mostly from seeds, but also from nuts, kernels and flesh. The reason why vegetable oils are also called base oils or carrier oils is due to the fact they carry, for example, essential oils into the skin. They are used for dilution of essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin. Essential oils are very concentrated and can be very irritating for the skin when used alone. Essential oils also have a very strong aroma, which is weakened when diluted with carrier oils.

Vegetable oils come in a variety of viscosity. Some are thick, some are thin, and some have medium viscosity. Depending on application, they can be used alone or with other vegetable oils and essential oils to change viscosity.

Extraction of carrier oils/vegetable oils

Carrier oils/vegetable oils are produced by process of extraction from plants’ seeds, kernels, nuts or flesh. There are several processes of oil derivation:

  • mechanical expression (also known as crushing and cold pressing): usually applied in a production of olive and coconut oil
  • solvent extraction: done by solvent extracts, which produce bigger amount of cheap oils, such as corn oil
  • hydrogenation

Trends are changing, but most typical vegetable oils sold in grocery stores are not cold-pressed. Instead, the oils are processed using heat. For the most nourishing, freshest carrier oils, strive to shop with retailers and suppliers which specialize in the sale of aromatherapy or natural skin care ingredients. Your local health food/nutrition store may be a source for carrier oils, but the oils can often be pricier. Watch for dust on the bottles when buying oils locally. That can indicate the oil has been sitting around for awhile. Look for oils that are not blends of two or more oils (meaning: mostly cheap non cold-pressed oils, with a few drops of olive oil) and that have no additives.

Processing Method: shop for vegetable oils that have been cold pressed or cold expeller pressed. This indicates that the oil has been pressed from the fatty portions of the botanical without the use of added heat. The process can still generate heat due to the friction of the method, but cold expeller pressed oils are processed under conditions that keep the heat to a minimum. Oils that simply say expeller pressed have not been processed to maintain low heat levels. When oils are processed without cool conditions, the high temperature degree and duration of the processing method can harm the fragile nutrients in the oil, thus reducing the content of antioxidants and vitamins.

Carrier oils/vegetable oisl have been used, aside from culinary, for cosmetic use for thousands of years. And there’s a great reason for their use, too. Carrier oils/vegetable oils are a rich source of remedy for all skin types. They are rich with minerals, essential fatty acids (oleic, stearic, palmitic, linoleic, linolenic, palmitoleic, etc.), and vitamins (A,D, E, K). Tocopherol/Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant, which provides carrier oils/vegetable oils with defense against rancidity (vegetable oils do get rancid eventually, though), and fight free radicals in our skin thus protecting the skin from aging.
