Madara Plant Stem Cell Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF30 Review

How lucky are today’s customer of green beauty products? We have all the beauty needs covered: from high quality moisturizers, serums, body care, hair care, makeup… and even sunscreen! If I just recall the start of my journey into green beauty now two decades ago, and how difficult it was to shop for green beauty products, including the shipment, and how many of the products we now take for granted, were not available yet – and that includes a much needed beauty product: a high quality sunscreen.

Back then, the only available sunscreens were conventional ones, the ones which contained now still used toxic sunscreen ingredients, such as avobenzone and benzophenone: they clog pores, irritate the skin, cause endocrine disruption, to name a few. How much of a skin cancer occurrences could we draw a correlation and causation to these toxic ingredients in conventional sunscreen products? Our ancestors, despite the abundant time spent out in the Sun, did not face such health challenges.

Soon after I started paying attention to cosmetic ingredients, at first – mainly from a stand point of view of causing acne, I learned of sunscreen ingredients causing clogged pores as well, thus stopped using sunscreen. Luckily, soon after, I found loose mineral foundation, which usually contains two natural sunscreens – zinc oxide and titanium oxide, so I had my sunscreen needs covered, even if only for my face, but that did not present too big of a problem for me. Why? Because unless I’m on a beach or when I know I’ll spend many hours out in the Sun, I do not block Sun and therefore a much needed Vitamin D absorption. I make sure I am not out in the Sun for too long, but at the same time, I do not apply sunscreen all over my skin, because this way, I don’t receive enough Vitamin D. While getting tanned during Summer is normal, I much prefer my skin to not be tanned.

I have found that for normal, not over-exposed presence in the Sun, wearing foundation, which contains zinc oxide and titanium oxide, whether loose mineral foundation of liquid foundation, I get enough sunscreen protection all year long. But in Summer, I like to apply additional sunscreen protection before applying makeup, and especially, since many times I don’t apply foundation at all, or in minimal amounts.

Having a strong sunscreen protection and a nourishing, hydrating and antioxidant cream and a primer, which does not leave a white cast, all at once, of course – a natural one – enter: Madara Plant Stem Cell Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF30.

The Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen comes in a generous tube of 100ml, to be used on face as well as on body. It boasts with a high SPF 30 and covers a broad spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB.

The texture of Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen is medium thick; due to high content of zinc oxide, which is the source of broad spectrum protection, it’s almost like a paste-like and of a bright white color. Its absorption is not as quick as that of an ordinary face cream, but that is to be expected: at the beginning, you have to find the most optimal amount of the sunscreen cream; once applied, make sure you thoroughly rub the cream into the skin and with it, the whiteness will disappear. Yes, once fully set into the skin, the Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen leaves no white cast.

When applied on a body, it absorbs much faster, and leaves less shine behind, but when applied on the face, at least in my case, since I have combination to oily skin, it does take a bit longer to absorb and the finish is not matte, but a bit of oily. I’ve tried several combinations, using the Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen with various foundations, to be used as a primer. With water foundation (I’m using the Ere Perez Quinoa Water Foundation), it does not work, as the foundation does not spread nicely, moves around and is blotchy. But when used with oil-based foundation, such as Inika Liquid Foundation or Inika BB Cream Foundation, it works much better. It also works nicely with Lavera 2-1 Compact Foundation, but the best results I’ve seen in combination with loose mineral foundation, such as Inika one.

The Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen offers the promised protection throughout the day: the sunscreen stays on the skin, even when in contact with sweating – it has a bit of that waterproof aspect going on. A natural organic sunscreen is much like a natural organic foundation, for example, in ways that with a natural foundation you get a myriad of skin-beneficial ingredients along with coverage and with a natural organic sunscreen is pretty much the same – you get a hydrating, nourishing face/body cream/lotion which also works as a sunscreen – Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen Cream is thus no different, containing such hydrating and anti-inflammatory ingredients as Raspberry oil.
