Jun 272019

Today we’re having the biggest heat wave of the year so far, and in between spraying myself all over with a fridge-cooled rose hydrolate, I’ll present my first impressions of this month’s Love Lula Beauty Box, which is perfectly themed for the hot Summer weather. June Beauty Box contains a mixture of hair care, makeup and skin care products, with 3 full sized ones, one travel sized one and one sample. The total value of the Beauty Box is £48; the actual cost for a monthly Beauty Box when you subscribe? Barely worth mentioning, though you will find all the needed info at the end of this month’s first impressions of all the goodies from June’s Beauty Box.

So, what’s in this month’s Love Lula Beauty Box?

Love Lula Beauty Box June 2019

NATorigin Lengthening Mascara (6g/£15,95). This is my first time trying anything from this brand (I have my own reasons). Based on testing this mascara since I received my Beauty Box, I’d say it covers many demands for a light-wearing and feeling, very natural look for daytime during this incredibly hot weather – or just as natural look as possible in general. The mascara offers a bit of a color – it’s not a rich deep and glossy finish, but almost like an ashy black. There’s little volume and somewhat of a lengthening of the lashes. What it does really great is separating the lashes in a very natural way and it does not glue the lashes together, again, making for a very subtle and natural look. Where it does not check a demand for a hot Summer mascara pick? It easily smudges (I suggest a translucent powder on your lashes, on your eyelids as well as under the eyes), and after about 4 hours, it starts disappearing. I do like the finish look it offers, especially for a daytime makeup. If you’re looking for a mascara, which colors your lashes with a rich and deep color and gives a lot of volume and/or length – this mascara won’t meet your demands. If you’re looking for an easy and light wearing mascara, offering a natural look – give it a chance. I do find the price a bit too high, though. While the mascara contains talc, given the mascara is not a loose powder product, I don’t think it should pose a concern.

Love Lula Beauty Box June 2019

NATorigin Pencil Eye Liner (1,1g/£7,95). This eye liner is very soft (probably one of the softest I’ve ever tried), with a texture that’s almost – creamy. Great as far as the application goes, but not as great as far as smudging – and it smudges a lot. I’d guess it would smudge even on those, who have dry skin, much less on those with oily skin. A temporal solution may be applying a translucent powder before and after applying the liner, but even that proved to not withhold the smudging. If you’re looking for an eye liner for a precise and long wearing use, this one might not be the one. If you’re looking for an eye liner, which you’d use for a softer, smudged look, this one may be your option, but the problem is, even then it will smudge – on the upper eye lid and under the eyes. The black color also fades into a lighter charcoal color pretty soon.

FOM London Anti-Pollution Hydra Plump Serum (Travel Size; Full Size 30ml/£46,00). I’ve gone through 1/3 of the travel size bottle of this one already, as I’ve been using it under my (very minimal, if any) foundation since I’ve got the Beauty Box this month. The serum is very watery, it absorbs in a matter of seconds, even when I get a bit overboard and re-apply it several times. Any other product on the top of this serum works nicely, as it’s very light. I do wonder, though, just how much of water is there in this serum and how much of any other ingredients, especially in the light of a very steep price (even with the heavily discounted price at the moment)? It’s very hydrating and has antioxidant properties, with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, green tea extract and niacinamide. Neither I nor my skin have anything good to say about the phenoxyethanol.

Love Lula Beauty Box June 2019

Ayumi Intensive Hair Conditioning Treatment (150ml/£8,99). The scent of this hair conditioner is very much in line of being on the beach – very coconuty, though the source of the scent is not all natural coconut, that has to be said. After the first application, I didn’t think this conditioner would do much of conditioning on my hair, especially not as far as detangling my hair – but it did, surprisingly so. Given the ingredients, such as coconut and avocado, it nourishes the hair and leaves it soft. However, not all is well in the ingredients department of this hair conditioner, which aside from the drying alcohol, it’s loaded with preservatives. I do not mind the Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate; they are preservatives, which are gentle and the least problematic, but the Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Ethylhexylglycerin? That’s just doing too much. And a very problematic synthetic fragrance ingredients Amyl Cinnamal and Coumarin? Too many bad ingredients for my taste.

Madara Weightless Sun Milk SPF20 (sample; Full size 150ml/£22,95). Madara has just launched their new sun protection range, and this Sun Milk is a part of it.

Love Lula Beauty Box June 2019

This concludes my first impressions of this month’s Love Lula Beauty Box. A good mixture of makeup, skin care and hair products, with a mascara, while not giving that “oomph” finish look, gives a very natural one, though it does smudges; so does the eye liner, even if very creamy. The serum – that one I’ve been using non-stop, as it’s very hydrating, absorbs before you blink with an eye, and works nicely before other products. The hair conditioner, while it does detangle the hair and has some nourishing properties, is loaded with too many ingredients, which I prefer not to have in my beauty products.

And all these products have a total value of £48,00, whereas the actual cost of the yearly Love Lula Beauty Box subscription is £12,66 (or £16,60 for international customers) per month (yep, even less than it was before). You also get a discount on all the brands featured in a current Beauty Box and even this discount got even better – now you can get all the brands featured in a Beauty Box for 25% off!

How did you like this month’s Love Lula Beauty Box? Got any products you’ve had on your wishlist? Found any new brands or new favorite products? Let me know!

The last one in this month’s routine series is my makeup routine; it’s been a long time since I posted my makeup routine, and since I’m on a roll this month with my routines, I’ll add another one – the Summer edition one.

As it’s very hot here (up to 34 degrees already!), I quickly switched to Summer makeup, along with my morning and evening skincare routines: just a little bit color here and there, just a bit of something to even out my skin tone. Depending on the occasion, I switch between which colors and color combination I use, but everything is minimalist and subtle. This is how I approach makeup: to emphasize what’s already great and to temporarily cover what’s temporarily an annoyance, at best. The more natural look, the more my skin breathes, the more fresh I look – the better. Natural, feminine and tasteful.

My Makeup Routine

My Makeup Routine: Foundation

My Makeup Routine

Following my morning skincare routine, I apply foundation. Currently I am still using the Ere Perez Quinoa Water Foundation (full review here). It’s a light foundation, which offers a buildable coverage, but even more so now, I use only a drop for the whole face – just a tiny bit to even out my skin tone; the goal is not to achieve a full coverage, at all. During colder days, I used this foundation mixed with a drop of an oil, however it is too hot for that now, so I just apply foundation, or, in rare cases, use just a tiny amount of Ere Perez Moringa All-Beauty Creme. I’ve tried using the Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF30 before applying the foundation, but it did not work as the Madara cream is too thick and despite it, too containing water, it just didn’t work; the foundation would not melt with the cream and the finish look was that of patches of foundation, kind of like dry watercolor. Occasionally, I swipe some Benecos Translucent Pressed Powder over the foundation, but not necessarily all over the face.

Another foundation I’ve been testing and using lately is the Lavera 2-1 Compact Foundation; this one, on the other hand, works nicely with the Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF30. For application of the Lavera foundation, I use sponge that comes with it: I gently swipe the foundation on my face, a bit here and there, just as I would dab here and there a liquid foundation, and then use the  Ere Perez Multipurpose Brush to thoroughly blend the foundation. Again, just a tiny amount of the foundation. If applied with the sponge, I’ve found there’s too much foundation on my face and eventually, it becomes very visible and since it also tends to oxidize, it’s not a good look. Some type of primer is a must with this foundation – whether it’s a light serum, Madara SPF cream or Ere Perez Moringa All-Beauty Creme.

I thought I’m going to get more play time with the Lavera foundation, but the hot weather arrived too quickly, so I will be soon switching to Inika Loose Mineral Foundation (full review here).

My Makeup Routine: Eye Makeup

My Makeup Routine

My eye makeup usually consists of one, at most two eye shadows in earthly colors, with a bit of a gold one here and there. But in Summer, I prefer even less products on my eyes and I usually go for a bit of a brighter look, which mainly consists of golden tones, and usually just one color. Currently, I am mostly using the lightest and the gold colors from Ere Perez Chamomile Eyeshadow Palette (full review here). Just a tiny bit on my eyelids, to get that bright look. Before applying eye shadow, I like to prime my eyelids with a bit of Benecos Translucent Powder to achieve a matte canvas and for the eye shadows to last longer.

Lately, I’ve been using the Benecos Glamour Look Mascara (full review here), which gives a rich finish look, both in volume and in length, but it may be a bit too much for my desired Summer look, especially during the day, so I am slowly switching to Ere Perez Avocado Waterproof Mascara (full review here), especially since it’s waterproof and since it gives a more subtle look, but I’m also testing another mascara, which makes for a very natural and minimalist look, great for Summer; but more on this soon.

My Makeup Routine: Blush & Highlighter

My Makeup Routine

While I prefer a powder blush and highlighter during Summer, especially in combination with non-loose mineral foundation, there are also positive aspects of using a cream blush and highlighter, but in very minimal amount – just so it’s noticeable and just so it melts with the foundation, even if it’s a loose mineral one. I am alternating between the Alverde blush (still), whose very pretty pink color compliments my pale(er) skin, and the RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Smile from the Signature Set: Mod Collection. As a blush, I also use lipsticks, a trick, and a way to use just one product for multiple purposes, I’ve been doing for decades.

I also use just a bit of a highlighter on my cheekbones; currently, I am using two highlighters (not at once, of course), the Dr Hauschka Illuminating Fluid and the RMS Beauty Living Luminizer. I’ve had the RMS Beauty Luminizing Powder Beauty on my wishlist, especially for the Summer, but it’s constantly sold out, so I’ll have to wait.

My Makeup Routine: Lipsticks

My Makeup Routine

I usually wear tinted lip balms during Summer and especially during the day, or turn lipsticks into ones by first applying a good lip balm and then a lipstick; this way, my lips are even more moisturized and the color is not too strong. I’ve been using the Ere Perez Olive Oil Lipsticks for a while now (a long over due review soon!) and I really enjoy them. For Summer, I especially like the one in color Surprise; it’s a very bright, very pigmented lipstick, so mixing it with a lip balm works best for me.

My Makeup Routine: Almost Barefaced

My Makeup Routine

Even though I use a small amount of products mentioned in this makeup routine, sometimes, I skip many of them, mainly foundation. I apply a light serum, followed by Dr Hauschka Light Reflecting Concealer under the eyes, a tiny dot here and there of the RMS “Un” CoverUp Concealer  (full review here) if there’s a spot or something, which I then set with the Benecos Translucent powder, usually using my pinky finger. Then a bit of RMS Beauty Living Luminizer Highlighter and a bit of a blush, either the Alverde one or I just use a lipstick as a blush. On the lips I wear a tinted lip balm – currently I am enjoying the Joik Tinted Lip Balm, which I received in my Love Lula Beauty Box not too long ago.

In short, here is how my morning skincare routines look like:

  • foundation: Ere Perez Quinoa Water Foundation; Lavera 2-1 Compact Foundation
  • eye makeup: Ere Perez Chamomile Eyeshadow Palette; Benecos Glamour Mascara; Ere Perez Waterproof Mascara
  • blush & highlighter: Dr Hauschka Illuminating Fluid; RMS Beauty Living Luminizer; RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Smile; Alverde Blush; Dr Hauschka Light Reflecting Concealer
  • lipsticks: Ere Perez Olive Oil Lipstick in Surprise; Joik Tinted Lip Balm
  • SPF protection/priming: Madara Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF30; Ere Perez Moringa All-Beauty Creme
  • setting: Alverde Rose Toner as a setting spray; Benecos Translucent Powder

All my routines, morning, evening and makeup ones are light during the Summer, and the makeup routine one is especially subtle, as natural looking as possible with as minimal amount of products used as possible and not all at once.

For some of the products I’ve already posted a full review and some will be reviewed soon, so make sure you check back.

Benecos Glamour Mascara gives a rich finish look, with volume and length on the lashes, while Benecos Translucent Powder gives a silky, quick and no-fuss finish look, and does not set in fine lines – both for a very low price point.

Benecos Translucent Powder and Glamour Mascara Review

I’ve been using the German green beauty brand Benecos for many years now – they offer good to great quality, especially, makeup products at a very reasonable, affordable price point: Benecos won’t burn a deep hole in your wallet, yet you’ll still get green makeup products that – work.

The two products I’ll review for you today are Benecos Glamour Mascara and Benecos Translucent Powder. As I’ve tried several of the Benecos mascaras in the past, I pretty much knew what to expect: low cost but high results. A few months ago I was looking for a translucent powder – I needed something light and something that won’t set into fine lines. Mission accomplished, and all of this, at, again, low price point.

Benecos Natural Mascara Glamour Look

Benecos Translucent Powder and Glamour Mascara Review

When you open a mascara and you hear that “ploop” sound, you know a mascara is going to be a great one: thick and wet, with a generous amount of product in a tube and – not dried out. This Benecos Mascara got that sound. The wand has plentiful bristles, reaching and covering the lashes perfectly; the application is easy and fast. As mentioned, the texture of Benecos Glamour Mascara is thick, meaning the finish look will be rich: it gives volume and lengthens the lashes. One layer will do for a glamorous look, but with two – and this mascara allows easy layering, as it does not dry out immediately and does not stick the lashes together – you’ll get an even richer, more voluminous finish look – but still – a natural look. The staying power of the Benecos Natural Mascara Glamour Look gives a run for its money many more expensive mascaras, as it stays on from morning till evening. The mascara does not clump and I’ve experienced no irritation; likewise, it comes off easily as well. For a better wear, especially if your skin is oily, I suggest using a powder before applying the mascara (of course, Benecos Translucent Powder works perfectly) and a good eyelash curler.

While the mascara is not waterproof, it does not smudge easily, if at all.

How about ingredients?

Ingredients: Salvia Sclarea (Clary) Flower/leaf/stem Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Acacia Senegal Gum, Brassica Campestris/aleurites Fordi Oil Copolymer, Glyceryl Rosinate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Silica,  Potassium Palmitoyl, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Oleic/linoleic/linolenic Polyglycerides, Tocopherol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Aqua (Water), Sorbitan Olivate, Cetearyl Olivate, Cetyl Palmitate, Sorbitan Palmitate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Xanthan Gum, Ci 77499 (Iron Oxide)Ci 77820 (Silver)

Potentially problematic ingredients? None.

My final word?

Benecos Translucent Powder and Glamour Mascara Review

The Benecos Natural Mascara Glamour Look is rich in texture and as such translates on the lashes, giving a volume and length, with lashes nicely separated – and stays on all day. It’s easily layered if you wish for an even more glamourous look, and does not irritate the eyes.

Price? It ranges between €5,19 – €8,94 for 8g, depending where you buy it and makes for am affordable, reasonable price point mascara. Given the amount of the product in a tube is generous, you won’t regret purchasing this mascara. I’ve tried quite a few Benecos mascaras, and will try even more in the future.

Benecos Natural Translucent Powder

Benecos Translucent Powder and Glamour Mascara Review

I was looking for a no-fuss translucent powder, something that applies quickly, does not leave a white cast, does not set into the fine lines (that’s what a translucent powder should be, after all). I was pondering between a fine loose mineral and pressed translucent powder, but I really wanted a translucent powder for as easy and fast application as possible, especially to have it in my purse and for a quick application during the day. And since I know Benecos makes affordable makeup products with good to high quality, I gave this one a go – a great choice!

The Benecos Natural Translucent Powder is a pressed – very pressed – powder. At the first look, it’s white and looks like this is how it might stay on the skin – not so. Very little goes a long way with this one: one or two swipes and it perfectly invisibly covers the whole face, should you need to, even if it may seem, at first, like you might need more. I mostly use it, just a little bit of it, under my eyes when wearing a liquid foundation, and as a quick, no fuss, touch up during the day, where my skin might start looking a bit oily. I also swipe it, gently, on my face when wearing little to no makeup, but want to achieve that non-oily and matte look. The Benecos Natural Translucent Powder also works perfectly when applied over a concealer: when I use a very minimal makeup look, and during Summer I am, I apply a tiny dot, here and there where needed, of RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up Concealer and the dab and tap the Benecos Translucent Powder over it, as it mattifies and sets the concealer. It also works great as a primer on eyelids, whether before applying an eye shadow or just as a stand-alone to mattify the eye lids. Likewise, I use it as a primer for mascara – as in drying the eyelashes. I usually apply it with a Real Techniques Multi Brush, or for a more precise, especially under the eyes application, I use Everyday Minerals Eye Kabuki Brush. From time to time – I just dab a bit of powder on my finger.

The Benecos Natural Translucent Powder contains a calming Chamomile oil and Argan oil, which has has anti-inflammatory properties; it softens the skin and is an excellent anti-aging agent.

My final word?

Benecos Translucent Powder and Glamour Mascara Review

The Benecos Natural Translucent Powder is a gentle, silky-like translucent powder, finely milled and sturdily pressed. Its application is easy and fast. It does not set into fine lines and works perfectly with various other makeup (and skincare) products – whether it’s a liquid foundation, concealer, or as a primer for eyelashes and eyelids. It works perfectly when going for a very minimal makeup look, when you only apply a skin serum, maybe a bit of a highlighter/blush and want to mattify the face. Large swaps or precision application – this translucent powder delivers.

Price? Another very affordable, reasonably priced Benecos product – €7,81 for 6,5g – and it seems with this translucent powder that it will take a long while before I hit the pan. If you’re looking for a cheap, yet highly performing translucent pressed powder – this one is the one!

Another one from much requested skincare routines – this time around, I will share with you my evening skincare routine. Since there was very little Spring and we jumped from a cold, almost late Autumn weather into a hot and sunny Summer, it seems in a day, I had to quickly change and adapt both my morning and evening skincare routine, and, of course, my makeup routine – this one follows next week. With hot Summer times, the biggest change in my skincare routine is using less (but still some) oils and oil-based skincare products, switching them for light skincare products, mainly in a form of light serums and moisturisers. My already abundant use of hydrolates only intensifies. In general, I tend to use less products in Summer time, less layering and I make sure there are days when I use only hydrolates in my evening skincare routine. There are also a few products which overlap in my morning and evening skincare routine.

My Evening Skincare Routine

My Evening Skincare Routine: Cleansing

My Evening Skincare Routine

During hot Summer days, I switch from using oil cleansers and cleansing balms to a gentle, light creamy cleansers. Even though I don’t wear layers of makeup as it is, even during Winter, I use it even less during Summer, which means a gentle cream cleanser does the proper cleansing. Currently I am using, for both my morning and evening skincare routine alight creamy Alteya Organics Gentle Cleanser, which I apply all over my face and neck. Usually, before I apply it, I spray my face with a hydrolate, then massage the cleanser for a few minutes, before rinsing it off. As an eye makeup remover I am using a cleanser, which is not designated as an eye makeup remover, but I’m so impressed with the way Pure & Light Dual Action Cleansing Cream removes my eye makeup, I am almost solely using it as such. Once a week I use Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm (I got it in my Love Lula Beauty Box), which quickly melts on the skin. I remove it by first rinsing my face with water, and then I gently press a gentle face towel or a muslin cloth against my face. Do not, under any circumstance, drag a towel all over your face, pulling your skin in every direction (whoever came up with this idea must at the age of 40 look like an 85 year old drunken “lady” of the night; how’s that for an intermezzo?). The cleansing balm is the followed by a gentle Alteya Organics Cleanser, to clear up the pores from any balmy and waxy residue that might take camp in my pores. Given how hot it is, I am now putting the cleansing balm aside till Autumn.

My Evening Skincare Routine: Toning

My Evening Skincare Routine

After I thoroughly cleanse my skin, it’s time for the favorite part of the skincare routine: toning. I generously spray a hydrolate all over my face and neck; currently I am using the Alteya Organics Chamomile Hydrolate and Alteya Organics Lavender hydrolate – sometimes separately, sometimes I spray both of them – and why not? I’ve been mixing various hydrolates for decades: either layering them or mixing them into toners after my taste.
About once a week, I use a very serious Jane Scrivner AHA/BHA Resurfacing Exfoliator – not a toner per se. It’s very strong, very concentrated combination of both AHA and BHA (review soon!), which I use after hydrolates and before a moisturiser.

My Evening Skincare Routine: Moisturising

My Evening Skincare Routine

If my morning skincare routine and then a following makeup routine is as light as possible during hot days, so is my evening skincare routine: I gravitate toward light, non-oily skincare products and I layer skincare products very rarely; but when I do, it’s not all over the face. Currently I am using Madara Deep Moisture Fluid (got it in my Love Lula Beauty Box), both in my morning as a makeup primer and evening skincare routine, as it’s light, cooling and refreshing. I alternate the fluid with Jane Scrivner OO Cream, which is light, fast absorbing cream. I’ve been using it for a while now, and while it wasn’t as hot as it is now, I used it over a serum or a moisturiser or over a face oil. At least once a week I use the Madara SOS Mask, most often alone, as opposed to being used over some other skincare product. During colder days, I used the Oils of Heaven Help Balancing Oil (got it in my Love Lula Beauty Box) both in my morning skincare routine, or more precisely – mixed with a liquid foundation, as well as in my evening skincare routine, but now I only use a tiny drop here and there on those parts of the face which need an additional balancing and nourishing pampering. Regardless which source of hydration I use, I always spray a hydrolate over it, be it a cream, a serum, a mask, an oil…

My Evening Skincare Routine: Masking

My Evening Skincare Routine

Masking is an integral part of my skincare routine as it already, but during Summer, I kick it up a notch as I make sure I leave my skin just be during the night, but still want to pamper it with hydration, detoxing, nourishment. That’s why I use only a mask before sleep, followed, of course, by a generous amount of hydrolates.
Every week or two, or so I use Madara Peel Mask, a glycolic acid based mask, which I follow with a generous amount of hydrolate and a light moisturiser and a tiny drop of Hemp oil where I feel a bit of a tightness. When I use Madara peel Mask, I make sure there’s a few days in between using the Jane Scrivner AHA/BHA Exfoliator. About once a week I use Bloomtown Soothing Mask, followed by a hydrolate only. And about once a week I use Bloomtown Clearing Mask (I am testing another charcoal clearing mask; more on this one soon), followed by a hydrolate and a light moisturiser or a bit of Madara SOS Mask here and there.

My Evening Skincare Routine: Exfoliating

My Evening Skincare Routine

Exfoliating is a must part in my skincare routine, but I make sure I do not over-exfoliate, either with mechanical or chemical peels, and I also make sure that either of the peels do not fall too close to one another. Currently I am using the L’Odaïtès Gentle Exfoliator, followed by a hydrolate and a light moisturiser or a tiny drop of Hemp oil. However, I am also using my go to for many years now exfoliator – the Andalou Naturals Lemon Sugar Facial Scrub; the review of this permanent gem in my skincare routine is so long over due! Whenever I use a mechanical peel, I make sure to follow it with a hydrolate and a moisturiser in order for skin to more readily absorb nourishment and hydration.

My Evening Skincare Routine In Short:

  • Cleansing: Alteya Organics Gentle Cleanser and Pure&Light Cream Cleanser as eye makeup remover; once weekly a Lyonsleaf Balm for a double cleanse
  • Toning: Alteya Organics Chamomile and Lavender Hydrolates; once weekly the Jane Scrivner AHA/BHA Toning Exfoliator
  • Moisturising: alternating between Madara Deep Moisture Gel Fluid and Jane Scrivner OO Cream, with a drop here and there of Oil of Heaven Hemp Oil and Madara SOS Mask
  • Masking: Bloomtown Soothing and Clearing Masks, Madara Peel Mask
  • Exfoliating: alternating between L’Odaïtès Gentle Exfoliator, but mostly and for many years – Andalou Naturals Lemon Sugar Facial Scrub

My Evening Skincare Routine

As with morning skincare, I do not alternate between too many various skincare products nor use too many all at once, especially not during such hot days (and nights) as are now, in order to let the skin breathe and not be over-burdened with too many products. However, hydration is still needed, but I make sure I “listen” to my skin’s needs and act accordingly.
