Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant is an all-natural, gentle and nourishing deodorant, with a handy oval shape to give you a natural and long lasting, body odor free, scent.

Elsa's Organic Skinfoods Deodorant Review

Deodorant – this is where it all started for me, this journey of the green beauty – some 20 years ago. Having sensitive skin as it is, the under arm skin is especially sensitive and after using conventional, toxic antiperspirants for many years, my skin had a violent reaction – to the point I needed a surgical procedure. My pores were clogged to the point I had one cyst next to another, painful to the point I couldn’t keep my arms in any other position than away from my body; there were red painful rashes all over.

It was after this incident, that I started paying attention to the most important thing when it comes to any beauty product – ingredients. It didn’t go as logical as one would assume – first, I dumped all the antiperspirants, containing such toxic ingredients as aluminum, alcohol denat, propylene glycol and parabens, to name just a few, before applying the same approach for skincare, makeup, hair care and body care products.

First I had to study how antiperspirants work: they basically clog your your pores into not sweating. Terrible notion, wouldn’t you agree? Sweating is our bodies’ natural detoxifying process, so by using antiperspirants, containing toxic ingredients, which not only prevent our bodies from detoxifying, but also store these toxic ingredients in our bodies (think lymph nodes, blood…) – what on Earth are we doing by using such products?!

Elsa's Organic Skinfoods Deodorant Review

Some 20 years ago, finding a natural deodorant was nearly impossible. I resorted to making something that resembled a deodorant by mixing backing soda, geranium essential oil and some shea butter and creating some type of paste; the result was so so, but still better than using any toxic deodorant ever again.

Slowly, I was able to get my hands on deodorants from, for example, Weleda and Lavera. Until about 6 or 7 years ago, when the green beauty industry finally started coming up with effective and easy to use natural deodorants.

I think I should point out (even though a long over due post about natural deodorants is most certainly in order) that there’s a huge difference between an antiperspirant and a deodorant, even more so when it comes to a natural deodorant. An antiperspirant works to stop sweating, a deodorant only to stop body odor; a natural deodorant does this with natural ingredients, including a natural source of a scent.

* * *

Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods is a relatively new UK green beauty brand, currently specializing in offering natural deodorants. Upon launching in one of my favorite green beauty stores – Love Lula – I ordered their first deodorant back in January and the second one, I received in my monthly Love Lula Beauty Box in March – so all in all, this review comes after 4 months of testing and using Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorants.

The first thing I’d like to point out about Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant is that it comes in a handy for application oval shape. So far, Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods offers their deodorant in 4 scents: the Dew deodorant’s scent is citrus, Ocean is minty, Love is a flowery patchouli and rose and for those, who have very sensitive skin, be it on its own or in regards to essential oils – the Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods offers unscented Sensitive deodorant.

Of course, when I saw Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods available on Love Lula, my first purchase was the Love Deodorant, followed by the Ocean one, which I received in my Love Lula Beauty Box, so these two scents are the ones I’ll review for you today.

Elsa's Organic Skinfoods Deodorant Review

Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Love Deodorant is described as more roses with a hint of patchouli scent. Unfortunately, it’s the other way around – the patchouli is far more prominent and the scent of roses just barely lags behind. Not saying the scent is not nice – it is, it’s just that for those, who are on a constant prowl of rose-scented products, including a deodorant, the scent, in this regard only, can be a bit of a letdown.

Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Ocean Deodorant is a very minty, fresh and refreshing scent – equally appropriate for men and women.

The texture of Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant reminds me of shea butter – at first, a bit stubbornly unspreadable due to its thick and quite firm texture, but upon contact with the skin, it starts giving up and becomes soft and spreadable. So, instead of rubbing the Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant, thinking nothing had stuck, just place the deodorant on the skin for a few moments to warm it up and then swipe it once or, at most, twice under your arms. At first, I applied the deodorant with too heavy a hand and too many times, resulting in the deodorant feeling sticky and would sometimes leave stains on clothes.

Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant formulation is quite concentrated, especially when it comes to essential oils, thus giving truly a long lasting and natural source of a scent; if you apply the deodorant in the morning, the scent will still be very noticeable in the evening.

Given that the Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant formulation contains butters and oils, it’s nourishing to the skin as well. And even though it contains coconut oil, luckily for me, it’s not comedogenic. If you’re new to natural deodorants, and first need to detoxify your armpits, Kaolin clay will that. Some natural deodorants contain, as their prime absorbant ingredient, soda bicarbonate and there are people whose skin has a negative reaction to it; Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant wetness-absorbing ingredient is arrowroot powder. All Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorants contains antibacterial and antiseptic ingredients, such as coconut oil, tea tree, while other essential oils not only provide pleasant scent, but also fight body odor. The biggest deodorizing ingredient in this deodorant is magnesium oxide.

* * *

So, how about the ingredients?

Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Maranta Arundinacea (Arrowroot) Powder*, Ricinus Communis (Castor Bean) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Magnesium Oxide, Himalayan Pink Salt, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candellila) Wax, Kaolin Clay, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Citrus Bergamia (Bergamot) Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil, Pogostemon Cablin (Patchouli) Oil, Citral, Linalool, Limonene, Eugenol, Farnesol. *Certified Organic, naturally occurring in essential oils.

Coconut Oil is hydrating and excellent for dry skin. It has anti-fungal and antiviral properties and is rich in Vitamin C and A. Arrowroot Powder absorbs wetness. Castor Bean Oil  has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties; it conditions the skin. Shea Butter is rich with Vitamins E; a nourishing butter renowned for its skin softening and moisture retaining ability. It softens the skin, fights dry skin and has anti-inflammatory properties. Magnesium Oxide neutralizes odor. Himalayan Pink Salt detoxifies.
Kaolin Clay, is a fat absorbent and an abrasive agent. It tones and cleans the skin of toxins, while promoting circulation. Tocopherol  is Vitamin E.

Depending on the scent, each deodorant contains different essential oils, but most of them are antibacterial and antiseptic in their nature as well.

Potentially problematic ingredients? None.

* * *

My final word?

Elsa's Organic Skinfoods Deodorant Review

Green beauty has come a long way when it comes to offering effective and pleasantly scented deodorants; Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorants fall right into this as well. Handy shape, no toxic ingredients, all natural ingredients, mixed into a well working-together formulation, from antibacterial, to nourishing and wetness-absorbing ingredients along with being nicely scented due to essential oils. The scent itself is long lasting and strongly overpowers any body odor. So far, Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorants come only with 4 variations, one being unscented, and since the Love deodorant does not have enough, at least for me, strong rose scent, in case Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods come up with a pure geranium/rose scent, you know I’ll be the first to get my hands armpits on it.

The arrowroot adequately absorbs sweat, of course, to a certain point. Again, this is an all natural deodorant, not an antiperspirant, so you should not expect from this, or any natural deodorant to stop the much needed sweat in its tracks. You’ll be wet-free provided you don’t do any heavy work, or hike 20kms.

I can report of no rashes or any other issues while using this deodorant for 4 months now.

And while I do have one favorite natural deodorant (review soon), which I’ve been using for many years now, the Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant has impressed me to the point I will make sure to keep it in my cosmetic shelf from now on.

Price? It depends from which point you approach it – an effective natural deodorant is a must, and while some brands are going a bit overboard with prices of their natural deodorants, I think that with price of €11,43 for 45g, Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant falls somewhere along the lines of : reasonable. Maybe a bit of an issue present the fact that I’ve been going through these deodorants quite fast; despite firm texture, these deodorants, once melted when in contact with skin, do tend to get used up pretty fast. But, my armpits are happy with this deodorant, so who am I to say anything?

* * *

Have you tried Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods Deodorant? Which is your favorite scent? Which scent would you like for the Elsa’s Organic Skinfoods to come up with next? Let me know!

Hello greenies! Hope you’ve had a great, sunny and warm week – I did! Aside from taking the time for myself, wandering in the forest, I did quite a lot of work in my garden. The fruit trees are looking gorgeous with their bloom colors, the bees are busy, the birdies are singing and acting a fool, hehe. I just can’t get enough of the beautiful Spring colors.

In case you’ve missed, I’ve reviewed an affordable but effective Lyonsleaf Facial Oil this week; it’s taken me a while to start testing it, as I’ve had so many other products to test. As always, I encourage you to not hoard beauty products – buy those that you need, use them up first before buying a new one, especially from the same category. Do not fall for the “green” beauty snobs, making you feel less-than for not having a new super expensive facial oil every few days; believe me, these reviews are not based on knowledge, much less an adequate personal experience; they are there only to serve the marketing purposes and to show off how much free stuff they can get or buy for their daily skincare routines. Being green is most certainly not about that, believe me! And if you’ve ran out of your favorite product or wish to try something new – why don’t you take a look at the many discounts, Spring sales and free gifts below – just remember – you don’t need everything that’s advertised, you will not be any less of a person and your value will not be any less if you don’t.

Lyonsleaf Marshmellow Soften and Rejuvenate Facial Oil is an affordable all natural facial oil, which deeply nourishes and moisturizes the skin.

Lyonsleaf Marshmallow Soften and Rejuvenate Facial Oil Review

I’ve got this Lyonsleaf Marshmellow Facial Oil in my July 2017 Love Lula Beauty Box, so it’s taken quite a while for it to be the next in line of the green beauty facial products, specifically facial oils, for me to try; I do not like having many, especially of the same category, products opened all at once, so I do my very best to first use up one before opening the next.

This was my first time trying anything from this affordable British green beauty brand called Lyonsleaf (another great reason to sign up for the Love Lula Beauty Box and discover brands and/or products previously unfamiliar with), and I’m really pleased with this product: all natural ingredients, working nicely on skin and the facial oil is also very affordable – you really don’t have to spend a lot of money in order to get a facial oil, which will check nearly all the expectations and demands of a good, if not even a great facial oil – and Lyonsleaf Marshmellow Facial Oil can attest for that.

Lyonsleaf Marshmellow Facial Oil comes in a handy 30ml bottle with a pump: for a more precise application and for the facial oil to be protected from going rancid. It’s of a golden yellow color and medium thick texture; the scent is quite strong, and I really like it – vetiver and geranium – lovely, indeed!

Lyonsleaf Marshmallow Soften and Rejuvenate Facial Oil Review

I’ve been using two pumps of this oil for my face and neck; the oil absorbs really fast, even to the point of being matte, provided you don’t go overboard with the amount of application, of course. With about 1/5 of the oil remaining, I’ve been using it nearly exclusively for the past 3 months for my evening routine: after cleansing and toning. Sometimes, I’ve been using it in combination with Madara SOS Mask.

Given the ingredients this facial oil consists of, you can expect a burst of vitamins, antioxidants, fatty acids and nourishing and calming effects on the skin. This facial oil indeed delivers the promised – a rejuvenated and soften skin, which is very visible in the morning – a soft and rested skin. The Lyonsleaf Marshmellow Facial Oil consists of several deeply nourishing carrier oils, such as Baobab, Borago and Rosehip oil; these oils make this facial oil a perfect oil for a daily use for those with dry skin; for those,w ho have oily but dehydrated skin – this oil should be used as a night treatment, despite being a fast absorbing facial oil. The calming Calendula oil makes this facial oil great for any skin type. And the star of this facial oil is the Marshmellow extract, with its remarkable softening properties, among many others.

* * *

So, which ingredients does this facial oil consist of?

Ingredients: Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) oil*, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) oil*, Adansonia digitata (Baobab) oil**, Borago officinalis (Borage) oil**, Rosa canina (Rosehip) oil**, Althaea officinalis (Marshmallow) Extract, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E) oil, Calendula officinalis (Marigold) Extract, Essential oils of Vetivera zizanoides (Vetiver) and Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium), Rosa centifolia (Rose) flower extract. Natural ingredients contain: citronellol, geraniol, linolool, citral. *Organic **Cold Pressed

Sunflower oil has a high content of unsaturated fatty acids. It is rich with Vitamin A, D and E. It spreads easily and is quickly absorbed. It’s an antioxidant and moisturizer. Avocado oil is rich in vitamins (A, B1, B2, C, D, E, and Beta Carotene) and fatty acids; an emollient, which revitalizes the skin. Baobab oil is rich with antioxidants and high in rejuvenation and anti-ageing Vitamins A and F, as well as Omega 3, 6 & 9 Fatty acids. It is a highly penetrating oil, making it perfect for intensive skin use and for softening dry skin. Borage oil is an antioxidant with high content of essential fatty acids and anti-aging properties. Rosehip oil is a potent anti-ageing ingredient; it repairs, restores and rejuvenates tired and stressed skin. Rich in vitamin C, beta carotene, anti-oxidants and vitamin A. Extremely high in essential fatty acids and is known to help treat dry, irritated, sun damaged skin.

Marshmallow Extract,healing anti-inflammatory properties; it soothes, and softens the skin. Marshmallow root extract has rich content of flavonoids (anti-oxidants), has anti-inflammatory, softening and soothing properties.
Calendula Extract has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It soothes the skin as well as heals the skin.

Vetiver has antibacterial properties and is great for acne-prone skin. It stimulates circulation and balances sebum production. For dry and oily skin. Rose Geranium has anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic properties. It balances and regulates oil and sebum, thus great for oily and acne prone skin, as well as dry and mature skin. It promotes skin circulation. Rosa centifolia flower extract has antioxidant and astringent properties.

Potentially problematic ingredients? None.

* * *

My final word?

Lyonsleaf Marshmallow Soften and Rejuvenate Facial Oil Review

If you’re new to green beauty and want to switch using all natural products, but don’t want to spend too much money right from the get go – get the Lyonsleaf Marshmellow Facial Oil – it’s an affordable facial oil, which will provide your skin with everything it needs: it will soften, nourish, moisturize and calm your skin. This facial oil contains all the right ingredients and none of the toxic, including any preservatives, aside from the antioxidant Vitamin E. It’s easily spread and absorbs quickly and you’ll wake up with a rested, hydrated and soft skin. For those, who either have sensitive skin or prefer a facial oil without essential oils (though you’ll miss on the pleasant scent), Lyonsleaf has this exact same facial oil but unscented.

Price? Only €17 for a 30ml bottle with a pump, although currently, you can get it for a discounted price of €14,85; as mentioned – affordable.

All in all –  you won’t regret if you give the Lyonsleaf Marshmellow Facial Oil a try; I, myself am glad I was able to try it.

Apr 192018

With sunny April comes my Love Lula Beauty Box – containing 4 full sized products (a face moisturizer, exfoliator, balm and cream eye shadow) and a pack of 3 samples – it’s worth a whooping £65 (but priced at the fraction)! I’ve had one of the products on my wishlist for a while now, the other – newly launched Balm Balm Rosehip Balm was added on my wishlist when it came out recently and there are two full sized products from a brand I’ve been unfamiliar with so far. All in all – this month’s Love Lula Beauty Box is yet another generous one. Given there are so many full sized products, please keep in mind that this post is only my first impressions of these products – all full sized products from this month’s beauty box will receive a thorough and full review later on.

So, what’s in this month’s Love Lula Beauty Box?

Love Lula Beauty Box April 2018

Inika Cream Eyeshadow Champagne (7ml/£21). I’ve had this one on my wishlist for a while now; especially after trying Inika mineral eyeshadows, which I really like. The cream eyeshadow can be used as a subtle shimmering primer for your eye lids; it spreads nicely and evenly. If you’re going for a bit more color – use a tad bit more of this cream eye shadow and gently dab it. As I have oily skin, the cream eye shadows tend to slide off eventually. I’m really liking this cream eye shadow for a very bright and natural look, with a minimal eye makeup, only to brighten my eyes and combine it with bright Spring blush and lipstick. I’ve also combined this cream eye shadow with Inika mineral eye shadow; they compliment each other perfectly. I’ll post a full review of this eye shadow soon.

Balm Balm Little Miracle Rosehip Balm (30ml/£12). Newly released balm from Love Lula’s own brand Balm Balm is a mixture of their popular Little Miracle Rosehip Serum and their classic balm base, which created a very rich, nourishing all purpose balm. For those with dry skin – you’ll be using this balm as a deeply nourishing and hydrating face balm during the day. Since I have oily skin, I’ll be using this balm as a special treatment, as a nourishing and hydrating mask. As with most Balm Balm products, this balm, too can be used for any dry and in need of special attention places – as a hand cream, as a body balm as well as as a cleansing balm. It has a gentle geranium scent – lovely! Completely natural, containing butters, carrier and essential oils. And very affordable as well! A full review will follow soon!

Dr. Botanicals Kale Superfood Nourishing Day Moisturiser (30ml/£14,90). Before now, I haven’t tried anything from this newly available brand at Love Lula – Dr. Botanicals. In this month’s Beauty Box, we received two products from this brand. The moisturiser is of a rich and quite thick consistency, making me believe it’s going to be more of a nourishing night cream, as there might be a slower absorption. Not quite. The cream quickly absorbs, and leaves a very matte finish, despite containing some butters. I’ve tried it as a makeup primer, and it works nicely as well. I am a bit confused regarding this moisturiser being a water based and not containing (at least this is what the ingredients list says) any appropriate preservatives; it also has a shelf life of 3 months upon opening. As this is only my first impression, I’ll need to dedicate more time for testing and later on posting a full review.

Dr. Botanicals Coffee Superfood Reniewing Facial Exfoliator (30ml/£14,90). The second product from this brand is a coffee exfoliator. Indeed, it’s like your home made exfoliator mix of coffee and oils at least when it comes to scent. A somewhat thick texture with gentle walnut shell powder working as peeling. It’s a non-invasive facial peeling, that can be used at least twice a week; gentle, yet removes dry patches and leaves the skin soft and smooth. The 30 ml tube is also quite affordable. Will do more testing and post a full review soon!

Madara Sample Pack (3 samples). This sample pack contains Madara AHA Peel Mask, Fine Line Minimizing Cream and Cleansing Milk. I’ve been using the AHA Peel Mask for about a year now and I’m really liking this gentle yet effective peel. It works great on an oily and acne prone skin, as it cleans the pores and works as a gentle chemical peel, removing impurities and dry skin, resulting in a refreshed and smooth skin. Look out for a full review soon; but if you can’t wait for it – let me just say – I fully recommend this AHA peel mask. The sample pack also contains a sample of Fine Line Minimizing Cream and Milk Cleanser, which I’ve been curious to try as well, given I mostly use cleansing milks for my eye make up remover. Oh, and in case you’ve missed, Madara has launched, just in time for sunny and warm weather, a sunscreen and CC cream – I’ll have to give these two a try soon.

Love Lula Beauty Box April 2018

The April Love Lula Beauty Box was quite generous, wasn’t it? Found any new products? As mentioned earlier, this month’s Beauty Box is worth £65, but you can get the Beauty Box for as low as £14 or so – I don’t think there’s any Beauty Box out there as cheap as far as the cost and so rich as far as the number of full sized products we get every month, wouldn’t you agree? The bonus is you also get a 20% discount on all the brands presented in the Beauty Box. You can sign up to receive your monthly Beauty Box here. Oh, and you can still get the March Beauty Box for FREE!
