Hello greenies! Sometimes it takes sitting down for another edition of discounts to realize how quickly the time flies. I’ve been busy putting together some new articles for you to check in the up coming days and weeks, testing new products, and I cannot wait to share it with you. Got anything planned for the weekend? Any Halloween parties? I guess Halloween is a time when some people take off their many masks, but that’s a whole ‘nother subject. Is it just me or do we get slammed with Christmas earlier and earlier every year? I mean, how can you be in Christmas mood in October? There is a time an place for everything, otherwise it loses its appeal. I mean I’ve put together some Holiday posts which should go live sometime in November, the general direction in which I want to go, but still – it’s still October! And – some great discounts waiting for you bellow – also, in case you’re already doing early Holiday shopping.

Laurel Whole Plant Organics Facial Exfoliant is a gentle, yet surprisingly effective facial peeling, based on almonds and oats grains, and suitable for all skin types.

Laurel Whole Plant Organics Facial Exfoliant Review

For keeping my skin fresh and clear, exfoliating is one of the main beauty routines of mine. I’m sure you know my favorite exfoliant has been, for many years now, Suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser, so whenever a new exfoliant comes into my hands, you know it will have to perform and compete against Suki’s.

So, being used to exfoliants, which are sugar-based and therefore a bit more raw, I was skeptical when I opened Laurel Whole Plant Organics Exfoliant. The first impression was – this looks like cake fill, hehe; the exfoliant is in dry form and has a gentle almondy scent and just a hint of rose geranium scent. I moisten the face and drop a few drops of water into a small amount of exfoliant grains to mix it in a paste. I’d suggest you add less water, so the paste is not runny and the application thicker, but also, so you don’t have to add more exfoliant than necessary.

When I first applied Laurel Whole Plant Organics Exfoliant, I thought to myself… hmm, I don’t think this will work, as the exfoliant is really gentle and there’s no such traction as compared to sugar-based exfoliants. After about 5 minutes of massaging the exfoliant, I was in for a surprise! The skin was so soft and smooth! For the sake of testing the exfoliant, I had to quickly apply mineral powder (with no moisturizer) to see if there were any dry patches – there were none!

Laurel Whole Plant Organics Facial Exfoliant Review

Since this exfoliant is so gentle, you can freely use it in the morning, as it won’t leave your skin with any redness. After I use the exfoliant, I use some type of toner, be it a hydrolate or Laurel Whole Plant Organics Elixir, and then continue with a normal beauty rutine – whether it’s make up application, or in the evening – some serum (the amazing Laurel’s Balancing Serum works perfectly with this exfoliant). From time to time, I apply a little bit more of an exfoliant on my skin and leave it there as a nourishing mask, and then proceed with exfoliation.

How about the ingredients?

Ingredients: Almonds˚, Oats˚, Chamomile˚, Nettle˚, Rose Petal˚, Red Clover˚, Marshmallow˚; essential oils of Rose˚, Rose Geranium˚ ˚signifies certified organic ingredient

Almond and oat grains gently exfoliate. Chamomile, a potent antioxidant, has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent, as well as calming properties. Nettle is rich in minerals and vitamins, it has especially high content of soluble vitamin C. Red Clover contains many minerals and vitamins, most notably vitamin C; it promotes radiant and healthy skin. Marshmallow has healing anti-inflammatory properties; it soothes, and softens the skin. Rose Geranium has anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic properties. It balances and regulates oil and sebum, thus great for oily and acne prone skin, as well as dry and mature skin. It promotes skin circulation.

And – rose oil.

Potentially problematic ingredients? None.

My final word?

Laurel Whole Plant Organics Exfoliant is another great product from Laurel brand. The exfoliation is gentle on the skin, yet it leaves the skin soft, smooth and with a bit of a natural healthy glow. I typically exfoliate approximately every 5 days, but this exfoliant, being so gentle, could be used more often. All skin types would benefit from this exfoliant, even those, who have painful acne.

Laurel Whole Plant Organics Facial Exfoliant Review

The only issue I have with this exfoliant is that while massaging it onto the skin, chunks tend to fall off, so the best way to go about it is to massage the exfoliant with your palms instead of just fingers.

The price? At first, it seems $44 would be a lot for an exfoliant, but the full size contains 50ml of it, and since it’s only needed 1 tea spoon of it, as well as it being in a dry form, thus lasting longer (as long as you’re careful and make sure you keep it away from water), I think the price is reasonable and justifiable; with a regular use of, say, every 5 days, you could stretch Laurel Whole Plant Organics Exfoliant to 5 months, easily.

If you’re looking for a gentle, yet effective natural exfoliant – then I recommend you give the Laurel Whole Plant Organics Exfoliant a try – you won’t be disappointed.

You can get Laurel Whole Plant Organics products at The Detox Market and Nuciya.

Which type of exfoliant do you prefer: sugar-based, grain-based? Depending on the needs of the skin? Have you tried Laurel Whole Plant Organics Facial Exfoliant – and – did you like it? Does $44 seem a lot for a facial exfoliant? Let me know in the comments!

Hello greenies! Wow, can you believe this is the 40th edition of this year’s discounts post series? I know these posts are popular – nothing like saving a bit when possible, right? Gotta admit, it’s hard not to take advantage of these discounts on a weekly basis, but given I’ve received (and waiting on a few more packages) quite a lot of products to test and review for you guys, I am putting a halt on buying and accepting products for the reviews, as I am working over my capacities. Well, there are still some products I will be regularly buying, like shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste… and… Anyway, I am excited to bring you all these reviews, to introduce you to the brands, stores and products in the next weeks and months. The excitement of all that I’ve got planned for this little corner of mine, sometimes, I just gotta pace myself a bit, hehe.

Good for normal skin, Fair Squared Green Tea Body Butter makes for a smooth application and skin, with a lovely scent.

Fair Squared Green Tea Body Butter Review

Fair Squared
, coming from Germany, is a fairly new beauty brand. As the name of the brand suggests, they pride themselves with being Fair Trade; in fact, Fair Squared was one of the first beauty brands being labeled with a FairTrade logo. They are also NATRUE certified.

Fair Squared Green Tea Body Butter comes in a generous, 200ml plastic container. The scent of the body butter was quite surprising; I was expecting a more gentle green tea scent, but the scent immediately reminded me of this body oil I used quite a long time ago… It has this citrus, orange scent, but as mentioned, it reminds me of this body oil, which also had tangerine, sandalwood, bergamot… The scent lingers on for a few hours.

Now, while it is sold as body butter, the texture, to me, is that of a body cream. When I think of body butter, I have in mind melted and whipped raw ingredients – various body butters, vegetable and essential oils, with no added emulsifiers. With body lotion and body cream, you need emulsifiers, as they contain water.

The application of this body butter is fairly smooth, though it takes about 10 seconds to be absorbed. It’s not oily, nor shinny. Fair Squared Green Tea Body Butter leaves the skin smooth and fairly moisturised. I would recommend this body butter to those who have normal and even oily skin. For those with dry skin, this body butter would not be enough.

* * *

How about the ingredients?

Fair Squared Green Tea Body ButterIngredients: Aqua, Glycerylstearate SE, Olea Europaea Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Vitis Vinifera Seed Oil, Glycerin, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter, Camellia sinensis leaf water, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Parfum, Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Citral, D-Limonene. Konserviert mit: Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate.

Olive oil is an antioxidant with high content of essential fatty acids. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, soothing and healing properties. Great moisturizer, promotes smooth skin. Shea butter is rich in fatty acids. It’s very nourishing, softening and moisturizing. It promotes skin’s elasticity. Stimulates skin and has anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. Grape seed oil is an emollient and potent antioxidant. It’s light, quickly absorbed oil, rich with Vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Green tea is a potent antioxidant with astringent and antimicrobial properties.

Tocopherol is a potent antioxidant. Glycerylstearate SE is a self-emulsifier. Citric acid  is a pH adjuster, buffering and masking agent.

As far as the perfume ingredient goes, Fair Squared assured me that the source of the perfume are essential oils. However, with citral being one of the ingredients, I am not certain just how much are the essential oils the source of the scent and how much citral.

If you’re wondering about D-Limonene, while it can be made synthetically, it is a constituent/compound, of up to 90%, of an orange peel oil. Yes, it has a pretty bad rating on EWG, but that applies only when the oil had gone rancid and the compound oxidized.  D-Limonene, in fact, has chemopreventive activity.

Potentially problematic ingredients?

  • Citral: while naturally occuring, this fragrance ingredient is synthetically manufactured, and is a known human immune system toxicant or allergen, associated with contact dermatitis and allergies. It falls under banned or restricted ingredients in EU. It has a bad 7 rating on EWG.
  • Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate – preservatives. Worth noting, given the shelf life of the body butter is only 6 months, it means the % of the preservatives is not high, but still present, nonetheless.

* * *

My final word?

Fair Squared Green Tea Body Butter, whose texture is actually that of a body cream, is an affordable (13€ for 200ml) and easily spreadable body butter. While it does contain ingredients targeting dry skin, I don’t think it would be enough nourishing for dry skin, but it will deliver some moisture for normal skin. It would be great during hotter days as well as after morning shower, as it absorbs pretty quickly and is not oily nor sticky, but for a night treatment, I will stick with body oils and more nourishing body butters.

Given the generous amount of this body butter, I am not even sure I will use it up by the time the 6 months roll around, as this is the shelf life of it.

Fair Squared also launched a new line of body lotions; I am also curious about Green Tea body lotion (another generous size and affordable price here); but I prefer using body lotions in the Summer due to lighter texture.

While the body butter does leave the skin soft, I also have to report a bit of an irritation – and that is due to citral, no surprises there. Should Fair Squared decide to re-formulate the body butter and leave out citral, that would make this body butter much better.

Would I buy it again? Probably – the size is a generous one, the price is reasonable and it leaves the skin smooth, but as mentioned, citral has to go.

* * *

What do you prefer to use as body treatment – body oils, body butters or body lotions? Have you tried Fair Squared body butters?

Fair Squared products can be bought at Love Lula, Big Green Smile and Ethical Superstore.
