What is Rose Hip Seed Oil?

Rosa Canina Fruit Rose Hip Seed Oil (Rosa Canina) is extracted and pressed from the seeds of a rose bush. Rosa Canina is found in Europe, northwest Africa and west Asia.
Also used in skin care are two other Rose Hip Seed Oils extracted from Rosa Moschata and Rosa Rubiginosa.

Rose Hip Seed Oil has a red-ish/orang-y/amber appearance and is very light in its consistency, along with having a distinctive rose hip scent. It is important that Rose Hip Seed Oil is cold pressed. If you come across Rose Hip Seed Oil, which has a clear appearance, it means it’s been refined: oil from the seeds was extracted using hexane, a carcinogen. Refined rose hip oil, aside from having then carcinogen properties if hexane was used in the process, now doesn’t have all the skin-beneficial properties anymore, as they were destroyed during high heat.

The fatty acids are properties, which regenerate the skin and can help in healing scars, burns and it can help preventing or minimizing stretch marks.

Along with being high in Vitamin F (essential fatty acids), Rose Hip Seed Oil also contains Vitamin A. Vitamin A regenerates skin cells, it promotes elastin and collagen, thus providing the skin with elasticity and youthfulness.
Rose Hip Seed Oil also contains Vitamin C, a great agent against anti-aging as well as for skin’s healing.

A reader from Italy has sent us a question about which unscented natural beauty products would be suitable for sensitive skin:

I’m trying to use more natural cosmetics. I have sensitive skin and I’m looking for natural cosmetic products that would have no scent. Can you tell what products without fragrances would be fine for my skin?

Scent is one of the aspects of beauty products that most enjoy; some even buy beauty products based solely on scent alone. I am very partial to the scent of roses, and have a hard time passing by beauty products, which contain the scent of roses.

However, some people either do not like scented beauty products, or their skin is sensitive to fragrant ingredients in the products. Conventional, synthetic beauty products contain synthetic scent ingredients (labeled as fragrance, perfume etc.). When it comes to natural beauty products, the source of scent are essential oils. Unfortunately, even though essential oils contain many skin-beneficial components, some people are allergic to essential oils.

So, which unscented natural products would be suitable for sensitive skin? We’ve compiled a few suggestions.

Here are some unscented natural beauty products for face care:

Readers Questions: Unscented Natural Beauty Products for Sensitive Skin

1. Acure Sensitive Facial Cleanser 2. Aubrey Organics Sunscreen SPF30 3. Badger Balm for Sensitive Dry Skin 4. Badger Balm Unscented Face Oil 5. Badger Balm Unscented Cleansing Oil 6. MyChelle Deep Repair Cream 7. MyChelle Supreme Polypeptide Cream 8. Badger Balm Lip Balm 9. A’Kin Unscented 24 Hour Pure Moisture

And here are some unscented natural beauty products for hair and body care:

There aren’t as many choices when it comes to unscented natural beauty products as there are with scented ones. You could always make your own unscented face and body care natural products, using various carrier oils and body butters.

Happy Weekend!

Jan 202015

We’re expanding our ingredients glossary by dedicating a whole post to ingredients; both good and toxic. You’ve been sending us emails, asking us about certain ingredients, their properties, for which skin type would certain ingredients be suitable, which products contain certain ingredients etc.  So, today, we’re kicking off this series with one of the most popular, used and versatile cosmetic ingredients – Jojoba Oil.

What is Jojoba Oil?

Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) plant

Jojoba oil/liquid wax is extracted from the seeds of a Simmondsia chinensis shrub. Jojoba tree is native to Southern USA California, Arizona) and Mexico. Jojoba is not really an oil, but a mixture of liquid wax esters. Unlike most other vegetable oils, Jojoba Oil does not contain triglycerides, which makes Jojoba oil a very stable oil, with a long shelf life. Unrefined Jojoba oil has a clear golden appearance and mild odor.

Jojoba fruit

Rich in fatty acids, Jojoba Oil consists of gadoleic acid, erucic acid and oleic acid. Due to containing myristic acid, Jojoba oil works great against skin inflammation.

Jojoba Oil may be the most versatile oil, used for all skin types and its amazing properties position it as one of the best oils in skin care.

Why use Jojoba Oil?

Out of all the oils, Jojoba oil resembles the skin’s sebum (skin’s own oil) the closest, it penetrates deep into the skin, absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy residue, but instead forms a layer which prevents the skin from its water loss, thus proving to be great for hydrating the skin. Jojoba oil rejuvenates and softens the skin, as well as minimizes wrinkles and fine lines. Aside from being a great moisturizer, Jojoba oil is a great anti-bacterial skin treatment.  Jojoba Oil does not clog the pores and is great for acne prone skin. As a cosmetic ingredient, it’s also used as an emollient and emulsifier.

  • various hair treatments (hair mask, hair conditioner, for split ends)
